Next to a restaurant in a corner is a very old antique cast iron mangle. Why it is here is a mystery as there is no sign.
It seems that it was once used as a decoration in this place with flowers in it.

"A mangle is a tool that was used in the past for simultaneously removing moisture from washed textiles and ironing them flat. Between two rollers, whose distance between the rollers could be adjusted, the textile was rotated, so that the water was squeezed out. Beneath the scrolls was often a receptacle for the water.

The mangling of small linen was often done with the use of a mangle board. The textile was rolled around a stick. By rolling the ironer board back and forth over this stick, the water was squeezed out and the creases disappeared. The top of the mangle board was often richly decorated and provided with sayings referring to the virtues of a good housewife.

The ironer is virtually no longer used in households in the 21st century. Its function has been taken over by the centrifuge. In some laundries, the ironer (ofcourse heavily modernized) is still in full use.

The word lives on in the expression "run through the wringer," which means to put pressure on someone, figurative speaking.
