This statue of Saint Leo the Great is located at Saint Leo Magnus Roman Catholic Church on Depot Street in the town of Ridgway, Pennsylvania. The statue is directly above the main entrance to the church and depicts Saint Leo wearing priestly vestments and holding a book in one hand and a cross in the other.

Saint Leo the Great was Pope from A.D. 440 until his death in 461. During his reign, he fought against the heresies of Pelagianism and Manichaeism, promoted strict church discipline, and confirmed the decrees of the Council of Chalcedon. His well-known encounter with Attila the Hun prevented an attack on Rome. Numerous sermons and letters of Leo are extant. Leo's tomb is in Saint Peter Basilica in Vatican City. He is considered a Doctor of the Church, and his feast day is celebrated on April 11th in the traditional Roman Rite and November 10th in the current Roman calendar.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "Leo's pontificate, next to that of St. Gregory I, is the most significant and important in Christian antiquity. At a time when the Church was experiencing the greatest obstacles to her progress in consequence of the hastening disintegration of the Western Empire, while the Orient was profoundly agitated over dogmatic controversies, this great pope, with far-seeing sagacity and powerful hand, guided the destiny of the Roman and Universal Church."
