Kezar Stadium is the current home of the San Francisco Dragons, and former home of the San Francisco Forty Niners and Oakland Raiders. Kezar was originally a single level bowl of bench seats, seating about 59,000. Not known for it's comfort. Kezar's seating was quite cramped and narrow. In addition, the running track between the field and stands meant that fans were a long way from the action, and only 17,000 seats were truly on the sideline. For a number of years it was primarily a home for the USF and St. Mary's college football teams, but that changed in 1946, when the Forty Niners were founded. While the college programs lost popularity, the Niners came to be seen as the primary tennant. This was made clear to the world when, claiming "field damage", the AFL Oakland Raiders were evicted after four games in their initial season. The Niners moved to the 'upscale' digs of Candlestick Park after the 1970 NFC Championship game, and Kezar went largely unused after then. The Loma Prieta earthquake caused a great deal of damage, and the stadium was condemned. A plan was hatched to recreate Kezar as more of an addition to the Golden Gate Park, and the result is what you see today. Currently the entire area is open to the public 99% of the time, and is quite popular for training and walking. The current seating is listed as 9,044 in the actual bleachers, and with room for more on the grass.
