A major slip 24 April 2017 left State Highway 3 through the Manawatu Gorge impassable. This was the most recent and substantial slip closing the highway since 2011 when another considerable slip closed the highway for fourteen months.
Geotechnical reports determined the slip was still moving and too dangerous for the contractors repairing the roadway to continue. Following the withdrawal, a new highway was planned to completely bypass the Manawatu Gorge.
Thereafter the bridge at the eastern (Woodville) end became orphaned.
A new road is being built over the Ruahine Range, to provide a safe, resilient, and efficient route between Woodville and Ashhurst. The new highway is due for completion by the middle of 2025.
The orphaned bridge provides hikers access to the 11.2 km Manawatu Gorge track at the Woodville end.
