Beersheba Springs United Methodist Assembly
Named for the local chalybeate springs, Beersheba Springs maintained a renowned spa throughout the last half of the nineteenth century. The Beersheba Springs United Methodist Assembly began as a resort hotel built in 1857. During it short period or operation before the Civil War the hotel was favored by patrons from the Deep South, especially Louisiana, and featured French cuisine and an orchestra brought from New Orleans. A number of he Louisiana patrons purchased cottages on the grounds. The hotel provided an escape from the periodic Yellow Fever epidemics of the coast and delta - 8000 had died in New Orleans along in the 1852 outbreak.
Looted by irregulars during the war, the hotel reopened in 1871 but never returned to its ante-bellum glory. Several attempts were made to operate the property as a hotel or tourist camp until 1941 when the Tennessee United Methodist Conference purchased the buildings and added additional facilities. Today it is used for assemblies, retreats, and workshops by the United Methodists of Tennessee.
