[EN] This carriage belonged to Mariana of Austria, second wife of Philip IV and queen regent until her son Charles II came of age.

Towards the end of Ferdinand VII's reign, the Royal Stables ordered three magnificent carriages for the most solemn occasions from Madrid’s leading coachmakers, Fernando Rodriguez and Julian Gonzalez. This “Grand Gala Berlin” carriage was made for the king and queen's use, which explains the especially lavish materials and technical complexity. The twin-strap suspension system and rich interior upholstery made it an extremely comfortable vehicle. The iconography of the gilded bronze decorative programme extols royal power, with mythological subjects and imagery alluding to the monarch’s virtues. The crown for which this carriage is named rests on two terrestrial orbs atop the imperial or roof. On certain occasions, the driver's seat was replaced by a gilded wood carving of a crowned lion with its forepaws resting on two globes.

Materials used in its manufacture: Carved and lacquered wood; iron, gilded bronze, leather and glass; silk velvet and shading; raised embroidery with metallic thread; gold and silver trim.
