This beautiful mural by artist Cabuloso shows two Bahian women wearing the traditional costume and selling Acarajé in the streets of Salvador. It was made in 2022 probably during the renovation of the museum.
The Baianas are descendants of African women who, during 400 years of slavery, worked as unpaid servants for Brazilian families. For the annual cycle of religious and secular festivals, Baianas dress in bright white starched cotton robes and wear their most flattering ojá or torço – a wrapping that covers their head.
Acarajé is a street food specialty from the Brazilian state of Bahia, a ball of mashed black-eyed peas fried in palm oil, then split in half and stuffed with delicacies, usually spicy pasta with cashew and shrimp base, plus whole fried school shrimp, served with more hot sauce.
I saw a video of this artist using sprays to create a wall mural. He is incredibly talented.
