The downtown Calgary Eaton's store was built in 1929 at 408 - 8th Avenue S.W. By 1988, Eaton's wanted a larger, newer store, which was to be built one block to the west. The 1929 store was demolished, but a large section of the lovely Tyndall stone facade was disassembled, preserved, and then put on the exterior of a new shopping centre built on the site of the old Eaton's department store. This is known as Calgary Eaton Centre. Today (2024), its main tenants are Hy's Steakhouse and Brook Brothers clothes.
The Eaton's department store chain failed in 1999, after 130 years in business.
