Forma parte do Conxunto Histórico-Artístico do antigo Sanatorio de Oza.

Historia

[EN] “The Oza lighthouse is a lighthouse located at Punta de Oza, in the parish of Oza (A Coruña). It is built in the Oza Fort, built in the 16th century and which housed a coastal battery. The construction of the lighthouse was finished in 1915 and it entered service in 1917. It stopped providing service in 1963, suffering neglect and ruin until 1996, when it was rehabilitated. However, since then it has not been used and the state of neglect it suffers from has caused continuous protests. It is part of the Historic-Artistic Complex of the old Oza Sanatorium.

History

The Lighthouse Commission decided to design the installation of the lighthouse in 1904. At that time, the only ones used to guide access to the port of A Coruña were the Hercules Tower and the Cape Prioriño lighthouse, but the position of both lights did not form a sufficient angle suitable to guarantee the correct position of the ships during the entry maneuver, so it was decided to install a lighthouse at Punta de Oza that would serve as a guide for ships entering the port through the northern channel of the Burgo estuary. Additionally, the construction of the Mera lighthouse was also planned, so that the western channel of the estuary would also be signposted.

The preparation of the project was assigned to the engineer Salvador López Miño by the General Directorate of Public Works on January 4, 1908, and it was approved in July of the same year that the lighthouse was built in the old Oza Fort, which had been built at the end of the 16th century after Francis Drake's attack in 1589. The final version of the project was approved on January 17, 1911, and the work was awarded to Juan Mosquera Morano in an auction held in September for an amount of 24,500 pesetas, to which 4,992 more were then added by foundation and accessory tasks. In 1914, when the lighthouse was about to be completed, the height of the tower had to be increased by 10 cm, since it was necessary to accommodate the lantern, which was finally of a larger diameter than had been initially determined in the project. The lighthouse was delivered in 1915, starting to provide service from August 20, 1917.

In 1932, the power of the lantern was increased and a new light was raised in a higher position, mounted on a steel tower in the Jubias, behind the Maritime Sanatorium of Oza, 294 m from the lighthouse, with the intention of forming a climbing system that served the ships to avoid the Basso das Xacentes (where the Urquiola ran aground in 1976) and the restinga of the Seixo. In 1955, the lighthouse ceased to act as a stringing system and began to function only as a reference light due to the construction of the shelter dyke, which changed the direction of entry into the port of Herculaneum, and from that moment on a new stringing located at Punta Fieiteira. It ceased to provide service in 1963, and for decades it was abandoned, until the site of the old Maritime Sanctuary of Oza was declared a Historical-Artistic Complex in 1992, a declaration that caused the Port Authority to rehabilitate the lighthouse in 1996. However, it was not it has been used continuously since then and it did not take long for it to fall into neglect and suffer vandalism, which has caused cultural and neighborhood associations to repeatedly protest the situation.

In December 2016, the council unanimously approved replacing the sanitary use included in the general planning plan with citizen use.”
