South Shields is a town on the north east coast of England. It sits alongside both the coast and the banks of the river Tyne. The rive was formerly a busy port area but its importance has declined and has been the subject of much renovation.
This mural is on the side of the pub called Hogarths and shows scenes from the town's beach area rather than the more industrial river area.
It shows a bucket and spade embedded in the sand of the beach and rather than the more traditional sand castle that would be built by a bucket and spade is a lighthouse. The lighthouse represents the lighthouse that guided ships safely from the north sea into the port in the river.
A butterfly on the side of the castle represents the regenation of both the town and its surrounding area.
