Marker Text:

The world famous author grew up in Doylestown and graduated in 1925 from the public school formerly here, having been a top- ranking student. His first novel, "Tales of the South Pacific", received the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. His many other books include "The Fires of Spring" (1965), & "Recessional" (1994). He traveled widely and was a noted art collector and philanthropist.

Michener wrote that he did not know who his parents were. He was raised by Mabel Michener, who later was argued to be his real biological mother, but he refused to talk about it. He taught English at George School in Newtown, earned his master's degree and taught at Harvard University. He began his writing career during World War II when he was stationed in the Pacific. He turned his notes into the best seller book, Tales of the South Pacific, which was made into a movie and a Broadway show, called South Pacific. His estimated book sales where 75 million copies worldwide. Even though he was married 3 times he had no children and gave away almost $100 million to universities, libraries, museums and other charitable causes.
