The ‘American Treasures’ series of postage stamps continued in 2003 with the issue of a booklet of 20 stamps featuring four different paintings by American impressionist Mary Cassatt. One of those was this c. 1886 oil-on-canvas painting of a young girl wearing a straw hat from the collection of the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Moreover, this particular painting appeared on the cover of the stamp booklet.
Mary Cassatt often portrayed young children in her paintings and on several of these, they were playing ‘dress-up.’ But in this particular painting, the child doesn’t seem to be enjoying it very much.
