In 1918, Mississippi became the first state to ratify the 18th Amendment, which banned the sale of alcohol and began enforcement of the 1919 Volstead Act. U.S. Marshal Jake Green was appointed as on the first prohibition officers in the U.S. on April 1, 1921. Green and Richton Marshal Lawrence Dunnam were gunned down along Piney Wood Creek while raiding an illegal whiskey still. Four local men were convicted of the murders. One served time in prison, one served a life sentence, and two were sentenced to death by hanging.
