The 1909 Grain Exchange Building has a elegant front entrance of fine wooden doors framed by sandstone.
Built by William Roper Hull, this six-storey building is considered Calgary's first skyscraper due to its height and reinforced concrete skeleton. The door is flanked by sandstone carved with Hull's WRH monogram and the building's 1909 construction date. The name carved in sandstone over the main entrance is that of its first major tenant: the Calgary Grain Exchange, an early commodities exchange composed of over 20 companies housed under one roof. The Grain Exchange moved to another building ten years later, but the sandstone-clad building has been one of Calgary's prestigious office locations for decades.
