Erected in 1887-90 following demolition of the old Dalhousie College building, the City of Halifax still proudly occupies their Canadian National Historic Site designated building.

The "Then" photo was taken in 1917, as compared to the "Now" photo it has retained most of its original design and unique characteristics.

The City Hall is a three-story, Victorian Eclectic with a dominantly classically inspired design. The building has been the seat of the municipal government for over one hundred years.

The City of Halifax has also recognized City Hall as a Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) Registered Heritage Property. It was designed by local architect Edward Elliot, city hall was built by the well known firm of Rhodes, Curry & Co. of Amherst, NS.
