This is a huge Orthodox cathedral, built in the 19th century. As its name indicates, it's dedicated to Archangel Michael. It's still a local of cult to the small Coptic community but eventually visitors are welcome, despite the heavy police presence and security apparatus. There are even guided tours of the cathedral.
After its original construction the cathedral has been renovated, expanded and improved along the decades. Its architecture is a fusion of traditional Coptic and Byzantine elements with a pinch of modern style. Inside the visitor will enjoy the stained glass windows, elaborated carvings and frescoes as well as the altars.
In addition to its religious significance, Archangel Michael’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral is also an important cultural and historical site, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Whether you are a religious pilgrim, a history buff, or simply a lover of beautiful architecture, this cathedral is well worth a visit.
