Founded in 1554 as the village of São Paulo de Piratininga by Jesuit priest the city has grown to the largest in Brazil and the fourth largest in the world. It has a population of over 11 million in the city limits and 18 million in the metropolitan area. It's area is over 550 square feet.

The waymarking is taken from the city hall in downtown Sao Paulo.
