Geology
On the horizon, we can see the Berlengas Archipelago, a relief with 300 to 480 million years old rocks. This archipelago is a relic of separation between the Iberian Peninsula and North America. This split started about 200 million years ago and gave rise to the Atlantic Ocean.
A sea with warm tropical waters existed here 175 million years ago. The coral, bivalves,
gastropods and sea urchins fossils found in the limestone are testimonies of that sea. The small star-shaped pieces are from Pentacrinus penichensis, a crinoid (sea lily) discovered here for the first timer.
