Plants of Lewis & Clark
On their epic journey from 1803–1806, the Lewis & Clark Expedition encountered many new plants which had not been known to science. They recorded 178 plants in their journals and collected specimens. Lewis and Clark did not "discover" these plants. Native Americans, including the Nimiipuu of this region, had long been familiar with these plants.
"Observe the face of the country, its growth & vegetable productions."
(President Jefferson’s instruction to Lewis & Clark)
The diet of the Nimiipuu included many plants. Bulbs like the Camas, shown here in flower, were harvested every year. Fruit from the Huckleberry, Serviceberry, and Cascara added flavor to dried foods.
The Nimiipuu used plants for their everyday objects. Baskets were woven from Beargrass and willow stems. Lodgepole pines provided the support for their dwellings which were covered with mats woven from Tule reed.
Gathered along this pathway is a collection of plants observed by Lewis & Clark as they traveled through this region.
