Beyond the cave entrance are over 30 kilometres of cave passages and over 295 cave entrances. It is called the Junee River karst system. The size and complexity of this system have resulted in part of the area being listed on the National Estate.

KARST
Karst is terrain with distinctive landforms and drainage characteristics resulting from the relatively high solubility of certain rock types in natural waters. Limestones and dolomites are the dominant karst rocks in Tasmania, but karst is also known to be found in magnesite, a magnesium-rich rock that occurs in northwest Tasmania. In some circumstances, karst-like features can develop other rock types, such as sandstone, granite, dolerite, and other rocks.

Karst often drains through natural subterranean conduits, some of which become caves, large enough for humans to enter.

SAFETY
Exploring caves can be dangerous, wet, and uncomfortable, and requires the use of ropes and specialised equipment. Organised tours allow the novice cave explorer to experience the magic of underground cave life, without the risk. If you are interested in caving please contact a caving club.

PERMITS
To protect them, a permit is required to enter certain caves. Entry to limited-access caves is only available to members of clubs affiliated with the Australian Speleological Federation.
For permit information, contact the Huonville Field Centre.
