The Stockton and Darlington Railway was the first public railway in the world to use steam locomotives.

The bridge has one large central arch across the river Skerne with a smaller arch on each side of the river to allow pedestrians to pass. These days only the pedestrian arch on the west side of the river is in use.

Apart from some small modifications the bridge has remained in use ever since. A red plaque on the bridge erected by the Transport Trust indicates that this makes the bridge the oldest railway bridge in the world still in use as such.

TRANSPORT HERITAGE SITE

The only modifications to the bridge have been the addition of curved flanking walls, holding back earth ramparts added in 1829 to strengthen the bridge and the addition of extra railway tracks on the northern side of the bridge. In 1967 the extra track bed was removed but the supporting piers were left in place.

In 2021 the bridge became a Historic England Grade I listed building.
