On September 6, 1869 8 members of Company E and Company K of the 8th US Cavalry were awarded the Medal of Honor for "Bravery in scouts and actions against Indians" during 1869 and 1869.

I've not learned how, but Guenther died a year and a half later on March 29, 1871, either 26 or 21 years old. The dates on the tombstone reveal that he was only 21 (11-13-1848 to 3-29-1871) but that would have made him very young when he won the M of H, so I am more comfortable with the age 26 figure. He is buried in Santa Fe National cemetery in Section A3, #1055. A picture of me in the cemetery the day this was marked can be found in the Medal of Honor posting for Y.B. Rowdy.
