Banff’s “new” cemetery (1950) is tucked away near the base of Tunnel Mountain. The original cemetery, the historic Old Banff Cemetery on Buffalo Street, is closed to new burials.
The oldest burial in this cemetery dates to 1957.
Due to its location in Banff National Park, and the associated strict space limitations, there are firm guidelines about who may be buried here in the Mountain View Cemetery:
“ The deceased must meet one of the following requirements:
“ ° Was born within the Town of Banff corporate limits
“ ° Was a permanent resident of Banff National Park at the time of death
“ ° Was a permanent resident of Banff National Park for a cumulative period of at least 15 years
“ ° Was the immediate next of kin of a person whose remains are interred in the cemetery”

On 11 May 2023, a prescribed burn of the Banff Compound Meadows got out of control and jumped Banff Avenue. A strip of trees between the road and the cemetery fence, as well as other adjacent areas, was burned before the fire was brought under control. (
