The house was built as rental property by Julia McElhiney, daughter of Dr. James P. McElhiney & granddaughter of Dr. Wm J. McElhiney, both prominent men in the community. Julia's brother, George W. McElhiney & wife Mary Johnson McEl. lived in the house in the early 1890s; Mary McElhiney is considered the founder of the St. Charles Historical Society. Her husband, George, had a colorful business career, making and losing 2 or 3 fortunes in Mexico & the Western US.
