The printed metal marker for the Stockinbingal Heritage Walk is mounted on a brown-painted metal post on the Martin Street side of the entrance to the Commercial Hotel, under a broad horizontal metal awning over the footpath. The text reads:
The COMMERCIAL HOTEL - 1911
Formally THE CARRINGTON 1892 - 1911
1892: William O'Brien first licensee of the Carrington Hotel;
a single, weatherboard structure with extensive stables
at the rear for servicing passing Cobb & Co. coaches.
1893: Licensee held by Robert Timms.
1894: Two blocks of Crown Land on this purchased
then leased to several owners over the next 15 years.
1909: Land and Carrington Hotel purchased by Thomas Ellwood.
1911: Extensive renovation of building with local brick
to two storeys, 12 feet wide verandah and 23 rooms.
Hotel renamed the Commercial.
At this time the village was flourishing.
1912: A billiard room and two shops added.
Ellwoods hall constructed
1971: Ellwood family sold the hotel to Patrick Donohue.
1977: Bought by Earnest Michie.
1981: Bought by Jeffrey Sivier.
1982: Fire destroyed main bar area, suspending trade
for the first time in 90 years.
Hotel closed for repairs.
1987: Earnest Michie licensee.
1988: Purchased by Gerald Hughes.
Ownership has changed several times since.
