This set of wooden stairs is in two main parts. The upper, NW section winds through Battalion Park and the stone numbers that give Signal Hill its name. It has many signs about the rock art and its significance. Wooden boardwalks connect the stairs in this upper section. The lower, SE section, is straight.
A chain link fence goes across the hill sideways as a safety measure, to keep cyclists and joggers from going straight down the hill and falling off the 3 m high retaining wall at the bottom. Metal troughs placed next to the steps are to help with transporting bikes up and down the stairs.
The stairs were built when Battalion Park was first developed, in the early 1990s. Today, they connect pedestrians and cyclists to the Rotary Mattamy Greenway (
visit link) , 145 km of pathways throughout Calgary.
On a clear day, you can look west and see the Elbow River valley and the Rocky Mountains.
