Around 1925, the Garden City Western Railway operated 15 miles of track northwest out of Garden City, Kansas where it connected to the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. Among the assets listed on its balance sheet were 1 gondola, 1 caboose, 3 boxcars and 1 locomotive - a 1915 Baldwin-built 2-6-0 Mogul with road number 25. The GCW Railway was established in 1916 primarily to haul sugar beets to a refinery in Garden City. Sugar beet processing is typically a late fall/early winter operation, but the GCW operated during the ‘off season’ hauling wheat, feed, scrap iron and other commodities. And the GCW still runs today out of Garden City, now with over 50 miles of track.
For over 30 years, old #25 was the Garden City Western’s only locomotive until they picked up a 50-ton Whitcomb diesel-electric in 1947. #25 was subsequently donated to Garden City in 1955 where it was placed on display at the Richardson Zoo.
