This bell was made in 1883 for the former campus of the seminary, then in south Saint Louis. It was cast by the J. G. Stuckstede & Bro., bell foundry of St. Louis. J. G. Stuckstede & Bro. was begun in 1855 by Johann Gerhard Stuckstede, and was operated for several years as J.G.Stuckstede & Co. In 1863 the original partnership broke up; J.G.Stuckstede then took his much younger brother Henry as a junior partner, thus forming J.G.Stuckstede & Bro. Between 1883 and 1884, the company changed its name to Henry Stuckstede & Co. upon the retirement of Johann Gerhard.

Nearby Luther Tower contains a carillon of 49 bells, which for many years was the only carillon in the state of Missouri.
