[EN] "Founded in 1856, the present-day Carmelite convent occupies the end of the steep hillside on which the former church of Saint Michel once stood; only a handsome, beamed lintel remains, bearing an interesting 12th-century Latin inscription (to discover it, ring the bell at the Carmelite convent).
When, in 1572, the "Siège Principal de la
Sénéchaussée de la Basse-Marche", this ancient church served as a courtroom until the Revolution, for over 200 years.
Opposite, separated by the "Petite Place du Palais", are the remains of the prisons, some of which were still in use in the 1920s. Two burnt-out windows and a cell bearing graffiti from 18th-century prisoners recall the past.
Nearby, the imposing mansion of Lieutenant Particulier Jean du Chalard, with its high roof, granite stone dormers and monumental door (inside the courtyard). It's a fine example of a 16th- and 16th-century Sénéchaussée magistrate's residence."
