In 2001, Poland honored four Polish cultural institutions in North America by featuring them on set of postage stamps. Three of these were in the United States, but one of them, the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences Library, was in Canada. The library was founded in 1944 by a group of Polish academics who sought refuge in Canada from the ravages of World War II. From humble beginnings, the library grew, eventually gaining the services of a professional librarian in 1982.

From 1969 to 2016, the library was housed in a building on the campus of McGill University in Montreal. This is the building seen on the stamp. (The library is currently located at 4220 Drolet St. in Montreal.) One of the people responsible for the formation of the Polish Institute and its library in Canada was Wanda Stachiewicz, daughter of an acclaimed historian and University chancellor and wife of the Polish Army’s chief of staff. After heading the library for over 40 years, it was officially named “The Wanda Stachiewicz Polish Library” in her honor.
