The year 1974 marked the 400th anniversary of the death of Italian painter, architect and art historian Georgio Vasari. To commemorate the Renaissance artist/architect, Poste Italiane issued this postage stamp showing his most notable design: the Palazzo degli Uffizi.
In the middle of the sixteenth century, Duke Cosimo I de' Medici desired to consolidate all the committees, agencies, and guilds in Florence under one roof. Georgio Vasari was commissioned to design the new offices (uffici or uffizi in Italian). The U-shaped building surrounds a central courtyard. The offices were located on the first and second floors with the third floor occupied by Cosimo I de' Medici where, among other things, he intended to display his art collections. In addition to designing the building, Georgio Vasari also painted much of the interior decoration.
Neither Cosimo I de' Medici nor Vasari lived long enough to see the completion of the Palazzo delgi Uffizi, both having died in 1574. Cosimo’s son Francesco oversaw its completion, including the art displays on the upper floor. Today, all the administrative offices have moved out, but it’s still used as an art gallery, one of the most famous art galleries in the world. The stamp shows the south side of the Uffizi as seen from across the river Arno.
