Charles Ives, of the prominent Ives family of Danbury, Connecticut, was captain of his high school baseball team, excelled athletically and academically at Yale where he was a member Delta Kappa Epsilon and other societies, and, after graduation, made quite a name for himself in the insurance business, structuring life insurance policies for estate planning. But all the while, in his spare time, he was composing music and it’s this music that he’s known for today.

Being the son of a bandleader, Charles Ives was exposed to music at an early age. Much of his musical compositions were experimental in nature making use of polytonality, polyrhythm, quarter tones and aleatoric elements. This sometimes rendered his music difficult to play and, in some cases, difficult to listen to. In fact, very little of Ives music was played during his lifetime, some pieces weren’t performed until years after his death.

But Charles Ives was not without his champions. Early promoters of Ives’ music include Aaron Copeland, Bernard Herrmann, Leonard Bernstein who conducted the world premiere of Ives's Symphony No. 2 in 1951, and John Cage. The latter no doubt due to the aleatory aspects of some of Ives’ compositions. His music slowly increased in popularity toward the end of his life even winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1947.

Charles Ives suffered from multiple health problems including diabetes and heart disease. He died from a stroke in 1954 and was buried in Danbury’s Wooster Cemetery. The outdoor Ives Concert Park on the campus of Western Connecticut State University in Danbury is named for him.
