Just inside the doors of Gallagher Iba Arena stands a 15 foot tall bronze of Pistol Pete. The modern day mascot is the caricature of real life cowboy Frank Eaton who served as the living mascot from 1923 until 1958. The names of all former students who served as Pistol Pete are engraved around the base of the statue.
After seeing Eaton ride a horse in the 1923 Armistice Day parade in Stillwater, a group of Oklahoma A&M College students decided that Eaton's "Pistol Pete" would be a suitable mascot for the school. They felt "Pistol Pete" represented the old west and the spirit of Oklahoma
A total of 96 students have worn the pistol Pete costume as the University mascot. Each Pete gets their own pair of six shooters, a custom Pete belt buckle and black and orange cowboy boots.
The original Pistol Pete costume head was made for OSU by the Disney corporation.
