"El Teatro Calderón de la Barca o simplemente Teatro Calderón es un teatro de la ciudad española de Motril, declarado Bien de Interés Cultural en 2005. Desde su inauguración en octubre de 1881 ha tenido un papel preponderante en la cultura local acogiendo representaciones de las mejores compañías nacionales y siendo escenario de los actos culturales más señalados de la ciudad. Asimismo, constituye la culminación de una tradición teatral que en Motril arranca desde el año 1634 en el que se construyó la Real Casa de Comedias que en 1639 recibió privilegio real de manos de Felipe IV.
Los orígenes del Teatro Calderón están directamente relacionados con el incremento de la coyuntura económica por la que atravesaba Motril en aquellos momentos, gracias a la recuperación del cultivo de la caña de azúcar, la consiguiente implantación de fábricas azucareras y a la extensión del cultivo del algodón. Estos hechos atrajeron a comerciantes que se afincaron en la ciudad, dando lugar a la aparición de una alta burguesía que demandaba un espacio lúdico-cultural digno de su posición. En 1880 se creó la "Sociedad Juan Cervera y Compañía" y en este mismo año se comienza a construir el Teatro.
El Teatro es un testimonio interesante de la arquitectura del momento que empleó con profusión el lenguaje historicista, respondiendo su fábrica a un neoclasicismo tratado con gran sobriedad. La fachada principal presenta el modelo empleado por la arquitectura residencial del siglo xix y también recuerda a las fachadas de las fábricas azucareras coetáneas, edificaciones que nos hablan de un prototipo de construcción muy arraigada en la ciudad. Su estructura sigue la tipología de teatro "a la italiana", predominante en Europa occidental desde época barroca. Supone la ruptura con el esquema del teatro clásico creando un modelo capaz de acoger la compleja tramoya de la dramaturgia posterior al siglo xvii, caracterizado por la marcada división sala-escenario, y por una distribución horizontal de los espectadores.
El Teatro Calderón contiene numerosos elementos de valor artístico como las pinturas de la cubierta de la sala de espectadores, las columnillas de fundición de los palcos y anfiteatro, las pilastras del proscenio y los antepechos de los palcos. Asimismo, destaca su importante presencia urbana, ya que la construcción en el siglo xix de dicho inmueble supuso la consolidación de la Plaza de España como elemento urbano central de Motril.
El Teatro Calderón fue rehabilitado entre los años 1991 y 1995 debido al estado ruinoso que presentaba. En dicha intervención se respetó estrictamente la estructura original y los elementos decorativos del edificio."

"The Teatro Calderón de la Barca or simply Teatro Calderón is a theater in the Spanish city of Motril, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2005. Since its inauguration in October 1881, it has had a leading role in local culture, hosting performances of the best national companies and being the scene of the most important cultural events in the city. Likewise, it constitutes the culmination of a theatrical tradition that in Motril begins in 1634, when the Royal House of Comedies was built, which in 1639 received royal privilege from the hands of Philip IV.
The origins of the Calderón Theater are directly related to the increase in the economic situation that Motril was going through at that time, thanks to the recovery of sugar cane cultivation, the subsequent establishment of sugar factories and the extension of cotton cultivation. These events attracted merchants who settled in the city, giving rise to the appearance of an upper bourgeoisie that demanded a recreational-cultural space worthy of its position. In 1880 the "Juan Cervera y Compañía Society" was created and in this same year the construction of the Theater began.
The Theater is an interesting testimony of the architecture of the time that used historicist language profusely, its factory responding to a neoclassicism treated with great sobriety. The main façade presents the model used by 19th century residential architecture and is also reminiscent of the façades of contemporary sugar factories, buildings that speak to us of a prototype of construction deeply rooted in the city. Its structure follows the "Italian-style" theater typology, predominant in Western Europe since the Baroque period. It represents a break with the classical theater scheme, creating a model capable of accommodating the complex plot of dramaturgy after the 17th century, characterized by the marked room-stage division, and by a horizontal distribution of spectators.
The Calderón Theater contains numerous elements of artistic value such as the paintings on the roof of the spectator room, the cast columns of the boxes and amphitheater, the pilasters of the proscenium and the parapets of the boxes. Likewise, its important urban presence stands out, since the construction of said building in the 19th century meant the consolidation of the Plaza de España as a central urban element of Motril.
The Calderón Theater was rehabilitated between 1991 and 1995 due to its dilapidated state. "In this intervention, the original structure and decorative elements of the building were strictly respected."
