NAME Faunus
BIOGRAPHY: Roman mythology: he was the god of the fields and shepherds, and also an oracular and prophetic divinity.
AUTHOR: Acisclo Manzano, 1995
PLACE: Barbaña Park
"In 1995, coinciding with the creation of Barbaña Park as an urban leisure space, two beautiful sculptures were placed thanks to the collaboration of the painter Xaime Quessada and the sculptor Acisclo Manzano.
It is the figure of a kneeling Faun playing the flute. In Rome, fauns were what satyrs and silens were in Greece, minor country divinities. The Faunus personality eventually dissolved into a multitude of small rural geniuses. His appearance responds to a curious combination of legs, tail, and pointed ears intermingling with a young body.
They deliciously play the caramillo, a type of flute invented by their ancestor the god Faun. Because they are spirits of agricultural fertility, they are frequently found in forests and fields where they provide beneficial help to the growth of grains and vines. The artist, faithful to the mythological description of him, chisels a sculpture that is realistic in its forms."
