In 2011, the Netherlands issued postage stamps commemorating 100 years of preservation efforts by the private association Bond Heemschut. The six different designs featured various buildings with heritage value which have been preserved in conjunction with the association. This particular design shows the former Noord-Zuid Hollandsch Koffiehuis which also happened to be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2011.
The building was designed by architect J.H.W. Leliman with Dutch Renaissance and Art Nouveau influences. Originally the terminal of the Tweede Noord-Hollandsche tramline, it became known as the NZH coffeehouse when Noord-Zuid Hollandsch took over the line in 1932. When the metro was being built in 1972, the entire building was disassembled to make room. It was subsequently reassembled but in a slightly different location and with an addition. The coffeehouse ceased operation in 2014 and today, the building contains a restaurant and tourist ticket offices. Seen behind the former station/coffeehouse on the stamp is Amsterdam’s massive Centraal Station.
