Saxon Street in Pilsen got its name from the former Saxon Gate, which was part of the Pilsen fortifications and walls. Saaská Street led from the gate to the Saxon Bridge over the Radbuza River down to the centre of Pilsen.
Between 1845 and 1846, a large part of the fortification walls on the west and northern outskirts of Pilsen were demolished and orchards were established in the area west of the Saxon Gate. On 8 July 1846, the Czech governor Archduke Stephen allowed the area created by the demolition of the walls on the southern edge of the city and the filling in of the ditches to be called Štepánské námestí (today Smetana and Kopecký Sady). The Saxon Gate was demolished in 1849 during the construction of the Saxon Bridge and the toll house.
Some parts of the medieval walls were still preserved, lying in the less exposed parts of the city's perimeter and did not represent a significant constraint to its development. They mostly disappeared at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
