Toronto is the most populous city in Canada. It’s so big it has multiple Chinatowns - as many as five by some counts. But until 2009, none of them had a traditional Chinese gate. The current structure is largely the product of Toronto’s Chinese Chamber of Commerce which financed its construction along with the city of Toronto. The grand opening was on September 10, 2009. It specifically honors those Chinese settlers who labored on the transcontinental railway.

In 2013, in honor of Asian Heritage month, Canada Post issued a set of eight postage stamps showing Chinatown gates from all across the country. The designs were based on watercolor paintings by eight different illustrators. Some of these gates have been around for a while but Toronto’s was less than five years old when the stamps were issued.
