1. ST. FRANCIS DE SALES CATHEDRAL, NW. corner of Superior and Cherry Sts. erected in 1861 on the site of Toledo's first church, is a lofty Gothic structure of brick construction, with eight outer buttresses on each side. Wooden trusses support the roof. The altar, a duplicate of one destroyed by fire in 1932, is of oak, and like the woodwork of the pulpit and of the bishop's throne, is hand-carved in Tyrolean style.
At the rear of the cathedral stands Toledo's oldest building, a one-story frame structure used as a parochial school. Built in 1838 as a Presbyterian meeting house, it was acquired as the first Catholic Church by Father Amadeus Rappe in 1842. -The Ohio Guide 1940
St. Francis de Sales served as the cathedral for the Toledo Diocese until the construction of Our Lady Queen of the Holy Rosary Cathedral in 1931. The building is still in good for having been built in 1861. The second paragraph from the AGS entry is no longer valid. The rear of the cathedral is now a parking lot as the 1838 structure no longer exists.
