This locomotive was originally built in 1906 by ALCO in Pittsburgh, PA as a coal-burning 2-8-0 consolidation, and delivered to Kansas City Southern as #488. It was part of an order for 48 of the popular freight locomotives made by KCS at that time (split between ALCO and Baldwin). By 1915, the consolidation design had reached its practical limit and was giving way to other more economical wheel arrangements. KCS converted some of their 2-8-0s into 0-8-0s to extend their lives as switchers. #488 was one of those and as 0-8-0 #1023, lasted to the end of the steam era.
The conversion of coal-burning 2-8-0 #488 into oil-burning 0-8-0 #1023 took place in 1925, and also in Pittsburg - Pittsburg (without the ‘h’), Kansas, that is. KSC operated a yard and shops in Pittsburg, KS and, when #1023 was retired in 1955, KCS donated it to the city for display. In 2011, after years of neglect and vandalism, #1023 was donated to the Heart of the Heartlands Museum in Carona, KS, about 15 miles down the track from Pittsburg. They’ve done a marvelous job of restoration and now have it prominently displayed. #1023 is the only surviving Kansas City Southern steam locomotive originally purchased by that railroad.
