This 60-ton, 2-truck geared locomotive was built by the Heisler Locomotive Works in Erie, PA. It spent its entire career in and around Mill City, Oregon working for various lumber mills and other manufacturing concerns. At one time or another it was Curtiss Lumber #2, Hammond Lumber #632, Mill City Manufacturing #2, Vancouver Plywood & Veneer #2 or Willie Shingle #2. It was saved from the scrap heap in the 1970s when it was moved to the Golden Age of Logging Museum in Washington state. When that museum went belly-up in the 1990s, the engine was acquired by the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad who restored it to working order for their tourist excursions.
Just a few years ago old #2 was pulling excursions for the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad in Garibaldi, OR. They now have another Heisler (Craig Lumber #3) which is almost identical to this one, maybe a little heavier. Anyway, Curtiss Lumber #2 may be overhauled and returned to the rails someday, but for now the 100+ year old locomotive is displayed for visitors to the Tillamook Air Museum. This museum is housed in an old Navy airship hangar which is huge with more than enough space for this locomotive among all the planes and other exhibits.
