On the exterior west wall of the Pitts Recreation Center (at Pitts Park) is a mural honoring Riley Leroy Pitts, the first Black officer to receive the Medal of Honor. It is approximately 15' high and 20' wide, with the artist's signature at the bottom right corner.
Captain Pitts' profile is prominently shown on the left side of the mural. He is wearing his officer uniform. The right side shows a helicopter, the posthumous awarding of the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart medallion, Medal of Honor, and the Silver Star.

Riley Leroy Pitts (October 15, 1937 - October 31, 1967) was a United States Army captain and the first Black officer to receive the Medal of Honor. The medal was presented posthumously by President Lyndon B. Johnson to his wife, Mrs. Eula Pitts, and their son and daughter on December 10, 1968, for actions in Ap Dong, Republic of Vietnam.
