Prominent early twentieth-century illustrator N. C. Wyeth made his home in Chadds Ford, PA, about 25 miles west of Philadelphia. The family also had a summer home in Cushing, Maine. Several of Wyeth’s children became significant artists in their own right, but the most notable of these was Andrew Wyeth. Andrew never wandered far from his homes and the vast majority of his work depict scenes in and around these two locations.
In both Maine and Chadds Ford, Andrew Wyeth befriended a local family whose life and property became inspiration for his artwork. In Chadds Ford, it was the farm of Karl and Anna Kuerner. The farm was located just a short distance from Wyeth’s home and studio and the Kuerners allowed him almost unlimited access. Over the course of a career that spanned about 75 years, Andrew Wyeth created over 1000 paintings and drawings at the Kuerner Farm.
Though often described as a ‘realist,’ Andrew Wyeth rarely painted an actual scene. He was fond of adding (or subtracting) trees and other landscape elements to suit his taste or adding (or subtracting) windows and doors on structures. This tempera painting, entitled ‘Young Bull,’ is no exception. It shows the Kuerner farmhouse as seen from the barn.
The Kuerner farm is owned by the Brandywine Conservancy who offer tours of the farm. Many of the scenes depicted in Andrew Wyeth paintings are staged to resemble the paintings. They do such a good job of staging that I was surprised they didn’t have a ‘young bull’ in front of the wall outside the barn. (But a dog did sneak into my photo.) The Kuerner Farm is a National Historic Landmark. The painting is on display at the nearby Brandywine River Museum which boasts a large collection of N. C. Wyeth’s works and also many works by the other notable Wyeths.
