L'Obélisque de Béthune-Charost - Bourges, France - Obelisks on Waymarking.com

An obelisk-shaped column was erected in 1841 in memory of the Duke of Béthune-Charost, by public subscription, in the garden of the archbishopric of Bourges.

It was on Pluviose 18 of the year 9 (February 7, 1801), that is to say a year after the death of the Duke, that the Berruyers proposed to the local authorities to build a large monument in memory of one of the great men of Berry, Armand Joseph de Béthune, Count of Charost.

But it was only 40 years after the plans were drawn up that the City of Bourges replaced this project that remained in the pipeline with this mediocre obelisk that we still see today. It does not come from Egypt, it is made of stone, with a simple plaque recalling the merits of Béthune-Charost.

Une colonne en forme d'obélisque fut élevée en 1841 à la mémoire du Duc de Béthune-Charost, par souscription publique, dans le jardin de l'archevêché de Bourges.

C'est le 18 pluviose de l'an 9 (7 Février 1801), c'est à dire un an après la mort du Duc que les berruyers proposent aux autorités locales d'édifier un grand monument à la mémoire d'un des grands hommes du Berry, Armand Joseph de Béthune, comte de Charost.

Mais ce n'est que 40 ans après l'élaboration des plans, que la Ville de Bourges va substituer à ce projet resté dans les cartons, ce médiocre obélisque que l'on voit encore aujourd'hui. Il ne vient pas d'Egypte, il est en pierre, avec une simple plaque rappelant les mérites de Béthune-Charost.
