"Howell Island Conservation Area is located in St. Charles County, across the Missouri River from the Weldon Spring Conservation Area. Entrance to the island is by a causeway over Centaur Chute. During high water, the causeway is flooded and access is by boat only. Use extreme caution whenever attempting to navigate in high water. This 2,547-acre island was purchased by the Conservation Department in 1978. It is mostly forested with bottomland trees such as cottonwood and sycamore, but shrub/grass fields also provide important habitat for wildlife." ~ Missouri Department of Conservation

Enjoy this 7.4-mile loop trail near Defiance, Missouri. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 2 h 12 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking and running, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash." ~ All Trails

"The Centaur Chute on the Chesterfield side of Howell Island is a body of water that has three rock (rip rap) dams and a causeway that keeps the water relatively still when the water level is not high enough to flow over the causeway - about 16 feet at the St. Charles gauge, 17.8 miles downstream. Higher than this can become dangerous as the water from the Missouri River flows over the causeway. The carry-in is 428 yards from the parking lot to the water. Depending on the water level you can put in on the concrete embankment .... Kayak fishers like to fish downstream of the causeway although the put-in more difficult. ~ Paddle
