Edward Warbass had a pioneering and exploring spirit until he settled on San Juan Island. Through California, Oregon, and other parts of Washington Territory he was in the auctioneering business, herded cattle, started an oyster farm and was a jack of all trades until he arrived on San Juan Island. While he continued various endeavours on the island, he called this home and settled here in 1860.
Then he started to promote San Juan Island and, in particular, Friday Harbor. His first step was to ask the Washington territorial legislature to separate the San Juan Islands from the existing Whatcom County. Then he worked to get Friday Harbor the county seat. Today it remains in the position and is still the only incorporated municipality.
Warbass continued to have many occupations on San Juan Island until he died in 1906. For a highly detailed biography go to the HistoryLink.org website.
