"The main square of Lugo , also known as the Plaza de España of Lugo , is located in the place where the old market used to be held in medieval times : that is, south of the Roman wall , in front of the Cardo bridge , at that time the center of the city. Like all market squares of the time, this one grew over time until it became the main square it is today. By this we mean that, to satisfy the growth of the population and meet not only the commercial but also the social requirements of the city , the square became the main square.
, incorporating, in the 16th century, new buildings and expanding its space considerably.
For example, in 1738 the City Hall building was built following a baroque design by Ferro Caaveiro with two accompanying towers decorated by the respective coats of arms of the city .
The clock tower was added in 1871 .
The Town Hall building presides over the square and is built with the immortal quarry stone . It has two floors that give access to a porch.
In 1914 the fountain that dominated the square at that time was removed to build gardens ; In addition, its pylon and pedestal were destroyed ,placing the allegorical sculpture of Spain at the entrance and the four lions on the stairs , which can still be enjoyed.
From the old square you can still see houses and arcades and the old bandstand , which previously occupied the center and was later placed on one side.
Today, the square is a rectangular plan that occupies about one hundred and twenty meters decorated by beautiful gardens, on the west side of which we can find a mall and on the north a sidewalk that is called Canton."
