This pillar stands on the 246 metre Core Hill some five miles north-west of the Aberdeenshire town of Oldmeldrum, and three miles south of the village of Fyvie to the west of the A947 road that links the city of Aberdeen with the north coast at Banff.

The hill it stands on is prominent due to being the site of numerous antenna that have littered it since the tall Meldrum Transmitter was constructed by the BBC in the mid 1950s shortly after the pillar was constructed. The mast stands in a compound only yards away from the pillar and has since been joined by three other smaller antenna.

The pillar is in good condition with views best to the north, with the ironwork and buildings blocking out views in other directions.

STEEPNESS: Gentle rise from the road approach to the south-west.

TERRAIN: The short journey from the road consists of grass, muddy in places.

ACCESSIBILITY: Reachable from a road constructed after the antenna went up which heads up the hill from Cross of Jackston to the west. From here it is a short walk to the pillar on the north side of the compound.

NAVIGATION: The pillar stands only yards from the base of the tallest mast on the north edge of the fenced compound. From the road end it is reachable by climbing a gate and heading to the right (east) of the various masts and buildings.

DANGER: None apart from one gate to be easily climbed and avoiding the maze of ironwork on the summit area.
