"The Old Church of Zafarraya is a neoclassical style construction attributed to the same architect who designed the Church of La Merced in Malaga.

Demolished by the seismic movements of the Andalusian Earthquake, it had three gable-covered naves with wooden coffered ceilings, brick walls and masonry. The central nave, very wide, formed a transept with a shorter one and at their intersection a dome was erected. It was accompanied by two side naves of lower height and at the head was the main altar. The façade was formed by a large door with a semicircular arch and a brick pediment.

The ruins that still remain have been the subject of a recent restoration, turning this superb monument into a space for the culture of the municipality, also serving as a landmark for the incipient tourism that is beginning to develop in the area."

Thanks to the initiative of the city council and the support of the Consortium for the Sustainable Development of Poniente Granadino, it is about to be recovered as a socio-cultural building, coexistence space and tourist landmark of the town. After a detailed description of the remains and some curious historical data, José Antonio Moreno, author of the book “Zafarraya”, published by the city council itself in July 1987, launched his complaints to the four winds because the neighbors had converted this space into garages. , pigeons pierced its walls and “its wonderful interior space is asking for a more cultural and collective use.” Well, finally after two decades of abandonment, the Zafarrayero city council requested from the company Dinamo Cultural a rehabilitation project and subsequent enhancement of the building that is about to be completed and for which the council has had the collaboration of the Association for the Sustainable development of Western Granada. The cost of the different actions has involved an approximate investment of 90,000 euros.
