The Spanish arrived in NM around 1598 and left a string of Historic Markers in their wake. This one marks the spot where Onate set up his first capitol. Actually, the marker is at a spot as close as the highway gets, which is not all that close.

Actually there is little to add. The spot is now sort of in the middle of nowhere - though if you care about such things it is interesting (opinion) to consider that while there, one is standing in the middle of the Rio Grande Rift Valley and that those mountains over there, the Sangre de Christo ones are moving one way while those over there, no, over there, the Jamez Mountains, are going the other way. Food for thought for a hungry mind. Einar
